How Does Joint Pain Occur?

Joint pain occurs when the structures that make up a joint—such as cartilage, ligaments, tendons, bones, or the surrounding tissues—become damaged, irritated, or inflamed. Common causes include arthritis, injuries, repetitive movements, overuse, autoimmune diseases, or age-related wear and tear. When these tissues are affected, the nerves around the joint send pain signals to the brain, resulting in discomfort, stiffness, or swelling.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), osteoarthritis affects approximately 528 million people worldwide, and 73% of those living with osteoarthritis are older than 55 years. Since osteoarthritis damages the cartilage that cushions joints, it is one of the most common reasons people experience ongoing joint pain.
